>>Verbs > Present Participle
The present participle is equivalent to the ending -ing placed on English verbs. In the English phrase I'm hoping, the present participle of the verb hope is used.
To form the present participle, you will take the infinitive without its -ar, -er, or -ir ending (its "stem") and add the following endings.
| -ar verbs (falar to speak) | -er verbs (vender to sell) | -ir verbs (partir to leave) | |
| -ando (falando) | -endo (vendendo) | -indo (partindo) |
Notice that present participles are invariable. In Portuguese, they have little use apart from a construction known as the present progressive, where you will use the verb estar to be with the present participle (this is similar to the English construction to be -ing).
