>>Adverbs > Adverbs of Time
These adverbs describe the verb, and none of them correspond to the rules given in the section on forming regular adverbs.
Here is a short list of some useful temporal adverbs:
| Portuguese | English |
| já | already, immediately |
| agora | now |
| ora | now |
| ainda | yet, still |
| amanhã | tomorrow |
| hoje | today |
| ontem | yesterday |
| nunca | never |
| jamais | never |
| cedo | early |
| tarde | late |
| logo | soon |
| antes | before |
| depois | after |
| sempre | forever |
Já has a variety of uses, most of which are covered by the translations already and immediately. When said on its own, especially with an exclamatory tone (já!), it tends to mean immediately or right now! The question já viu? means did you already see (it)? Já veremos refers to the future, and means we shall (soon) see or we'll see.
Ainda almost always means still or yet. Ainda não sabe? means you still don't know? An appropriate response to that question is ainda não (literally still no). The phrase se ainda means even if, and is usually followed by a verb in the imperfect subjunctive.
The word nunca is more common than jamais, but the meaning is extremely powerful when the two are used together (nunca jamais!). Não mais means no more or no longer, and nunca mais means never more or never again.
