>>Adverbs > Adverbs of Place
These adverbs represent places, and none of them correspond to the rules given in the section on forming regular adverbs.
Here is a short list of some useful adverbs of place:
| Portuguese | English |
| aqui | here |
| aí | right there (in front of you) |
| ali | there |
| lá | over there (far away) |
| lá em baixo | down there |
| lá em cima | up there |
| perto | close |
| longe | far |
| nenhures | nowhere* |
| cá | (to) here, over here |
| fora | outside |
| dentro | inside |
| além | beyond |
*Nenhures is a poetic or archaic word for nowhere. Portuguese speakers now prefer a construction like nenhum lugar (literally no place) or nenhum lado (no side).
Perto and longe also act as adjectives. In this case, the preposition de can follow both adverbs; perto de means close to and longe de means far from.
Ainda almost always means still or yet. Ainda não sabe? means you still don't know? An appropriate response to that question is ainda não (literally still no). The phrase se ainda means even if, and is usually followed by a verb in the imperfect subjunctive.
The adverb cá means here when direction toward is involved. Venha cá! means come (over) here.
